How to use humour in your content

Many brands are now trying to use humour in their content to attract more readers and/or viewers. However, it’s important to remember that humour is subjective.

Of course, you would have already researched your buyer persona and realise what types of humour your audience is most likely going to respond positively to.

When you do try to add humour to your content, keep the following things in mind.

  • Don’t move away from your brand identity

Your brand identity is incredibly important. It is the way that others see your brand and perceives you as a business. If you have a brand identity that is carefully crafted and perceived favourably then this is important to keep this up.

Many comedians can get away with political satire and religious humour, but for a brand, this is a big no-no. It’s important to stay impartial on anything that can possibly be considered to be dangerous territory.

  • Keep it genuine

Younger audiences are able to see through falsehoods and not genuine behaviour very easily. This means that your humour needs to be genuine and be truthful to your brand identity as mentioned before.

But of course, millennials are the most sought after demographic when it comes to marketing. Since they are also the purchasers of the future. Because of this, knowing how to market to millennials is a great way to earn their loyalty and respect.

It is also important to know your audience. If you are marketing to millennials who have no interest in anything on SBS or ABC, then there is no point to talk about shocking moments on those channels, since it will fall flat with your audience.

  • Be extra careful on social media

Social media is a great way to build audience respect and trust. But it is also a very dangerous and perilous way to engage with your audience. Using trending hashtags is a great way to gain exposure. But it can also be very dangerous.

Before you start engaging with trending hashtags make sure you understand the cause and reason for this hashtag to be trending. This is a surefire way to make sure that you are able to be considered tone deaf. Or even worse, to become publicly attacked for being considered rude.

  • Humour is subjective

The author of this blog absolutely loves his puns. Puns are a great way to crack a joke, but not everyone loves puns. Our marketing manager isn’t the biggest fan of puns. Each person has their own sense of humour and this makes using humour difficult. As per usual, it all comes down to using the buyer persona’s that you have created. If you use these. Everything will work out.

Of course, a Buyer Persona is a general guideline as to what individuals will enjoy. But it is a great way to start off.

Now go and be hilarious!

Each business has a different Buyer Persona and it is always a bit perilous to try and be funny. But with the guide that we have given you, you should be able to start using your content more effectively to engage with your audience. Now all that is left to do is actually be funny.
